It’s no secret that Sherry is one of Spain’s most famous wines. The area around Jerez, where Sherry is made, is the oldest wine region in Spain. In fact, ‘Sherry’ is actually the Anglified pronunciation of Jerez.
The names Sherry and Jerez originate from the Arabic word, Sherish, the name of a town founded by the Phoenicians almost 3,000 years ago. In 1996, Sherry became a protected designation of origin, so to bear the name Sherry, the wine must come from the “Sherry Triangle” of Andulucía, located between the towns of Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa María.
